Made to Measure Guide

How to find your measurements

Measure your favourite garments, don't measure your body.

We have created many thousands of custom made pieces for our clients over the past few decades. Our experience has told us that the best way for us to get this right the first time is to take your garment measurements.

We are looking for garment measurements here because that tells us not just your body size, but your fit preference too. Rather than guess how tight, or how loose you like it, we can just create our sizing template for you by using one you already like!

Waist

Lay the trousers flat and button the waist button. Measure from one side of the waistband to the other, making sure that the front of the waistband is laying over the top of the back.

Double the measurement to give us the full circumference.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly so that it is tight.

This is a very important measurement, and its important to remember that the size of the trousers doesn't always translate to the waist measurement (sometimes a size 32 trousers has a 35" waist!).

Hips

Lay the trousers flay on a surface face down. Measure from one side of the trousers to the other about halfway down the seat (as pictured).

Double the measurement to give us the full circumference.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

Outside Leg

Lay the trousers down on a surface so that you can see the seam up the side of the leg, and extend the leg out fully.

Measure straight up the side seam of the leg from the bottom of the waistband to the bottom of the leg. Be careful to remember not to include the waistband in this measurement.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

Thigh

Lay the trousers flat on a surface, face up. Pull one leg flat and find the widest point from crotch ends and where the leg begins.

Measure from the bottom of the crotch, straight across the trousers to the side of the leg.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

Knee

Lay the trousers flat on a surface, face up. Extend one leg of the trousers out.

Measure from one side of the leg to the other, about halfway down the leg where your knee would be.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

This measurement is not normally used to create trousers, however we have found it to be very useful in an age where many people have customised the shape of their trousers leg, and particularly where a client is looking for a skinnier shape to the trousers.

Hem

Lay the trousers flat on a surface, face up. Extend one leg of the trousers out.

Measure from one side of the leg to the other across the hem at the very bottom of the leg.

Be sure to lay the trousers flat and pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

Front Crotch

Find the seam for the zipper at the front of the trousers that runs all the way under the crotch.

Measure down the seam from the bottom of the waistband to the 4-way join at the bottom of the crotch. Be sure not to include the waistband in this measurement.

Be sure to pull it firmly without being tight. Be careful not to pull it so tight that it stretches the fabric, you may end up with a number a bit larger than you intended.

Back Crotch

Find the seam down the back of the trousers that runs all the way under the crotch.
